The Great Lesson of Creation

On Monday, September 5th, The Great Lesson of Creation was presented to the students in the combined Lower and Upper Primary class.  While the story unfolded, the third year students conducted science experiments that exemplified some of the scientific laws that were at work when the universe was formed. Once complete, the 4th and 5th year students contrasted The Great Lesson of Creation with presentations of the Hindu, Celtic and Egyptian creation stories, as well as their own unique story, all of which they researched and prepared in Vicky’s creative arts programme. The presentation of other creation stories serves to broaden the awareness and perspectives of children by revealing how the same event could have multiple interpretations.

Student Leadership through Service

Through community service, students learn to be more responsible, compassionate and develop a sense of stewardship for the world and others around them. Although they are young, they can contribute to their community and by doing so they see that they can make a difference in the world. Community service is incorporated into all levels of the Montessori Program at Montessori Bali. In the Primary Years, students work with local organizations to protect the environment, help those less fortunate and to make the world a better place.

Community service can also be used to benefit and strengthen ties within our local school community. I am working with small groups of Upper Primary students to give back in different ways to their school and fellow students. Upper Primary students have been grouped into one of five groups which is then responsible for specific tasks. The five groups are Sports Equipment, Recycling and Compost, Technology, Animal Care and Grounds Upkeep. Below are descriptions of each of these groups and some of their responsibilities.

Care of the environment activities in the Outdoor Programme

Nature has always been an integral part of Montessori education.

When our preschool children come outside to work in the Outdoor Programme, they are exposed to our spacious garden with varieties of different plants. Children get the chance to explore and to enjoy the beauty of the outdoor surroundings, such as the colourful leaves and flowers. They also experience some of these plants growing old, changing colours, dying and decomposing.
